How to Apply Vinyl Stickers
to Sails & Boat Hulls
Step-by-step instructions for applying PVC marine vinyl stickers — from preparation through to a lasting, professional finish.

A sticker applied to a clean, properly prepared surface in the right conditions will last for years — several sailing seasons in marine environments. This guide covers everything you need to know, whether you're applying mainsail graphics, hull stickers, or sail numbers.
Before You Start
These stickers use a high-strength marine-grade adhesive, designed to bond permanently to sails, hulls, and laminate surfaces. The adhesive is pressure-activated and needs time to fully cure — so preparation and patience both matter.
Tools You'll Need
Preparation
Correct preparation is the single most important factor in a lasting result. Do not skip this step.
Remove all salt, sand and residue thoroughly. Salt is the number one reason stickers fail — it prevents the adhesive from bonding. Pay close attention to batten pockets and any seams where salt can accumulate.
Allow to air dry fully or wipe down with a clean cloth. The surface must be completely dry before application. Any moisture under the sticker will compromise the bond.
Remove battens and apply light downhaul tension to flatten the sail panel as much as possible. A flatter surface makes application significantly easier and gives a cleaner result.
Application — Step by Step
We recommend the dry technique wherever possible — it gives the cleanest result and works well on sails and hulls alike. Wet application is an option for larger stickers or when conditions make dry application difficult.
Dry Technique
RecommendedPlace the sticker on the surface without exposing the adhesive. Use small pieces of masking tape on each corner to hold it in position and check alignment. When you're happy, run a strip of masking tape down the centre length of the sticker — this divides it in half for the next step.
Fold back one half of the sticker along the centre tape line. Peel off and discard that half of the release liner. Keep the exposed adhesive away from the surface until you're ready to apply.
Gently lower the exposed half onto the surface. Using your squeegee, work from the centre outward in all directions to press the sticker down and push out any air bubbles. Then remove the masking tape and repeat on the second half.
Run the squeegee firmly over all edges to ensure they're fully bonded. The edges are where water gets in — give them extra attention. A sharp tug can release the sticker cleanly in the first few minutes if you need to reposition before the adhesive fully cures.
Wet Technique
Use application fluid only — not soapy waterSpray application fluid generously over the entire area. Peel the full release liner off the sticker while keeping it wet with fluid. Place the sticker onto the fluid-covered surface — it will slide freely, allowing you to position it accurately.
Once positioned, use a soft squeegee working from the centre outward to remove the fluid and any air bubbles. Wipe excess fluid from the edges with a clean cloth. Wait at least 1 minute for the fluid to evaporate before checking edges.
Do not use soapy water — soap leaves a residue behind the sticker that can affect adhesion over time. Use alcohol-based application fluid, which evaporates cleanly even from behind the sticker.

Key Tips
Use application fluid for wet method. Soap leaves residue that can affect adhesion — application fluid evaporates cleanly even from behind the sticker.
Wind and direct sunlight make application significantly harder. A hangar, sailing academy, or large indoor space is ideal.
One to hold, one to apply — particularly important for larger stickers to prevent the sticker touching itself and sticking prematurely.
A sharp tug will release the sticker cleanly in the first few minutes before the adhesive fully cures — so don't panic if you catch a bubble.

Removal
These stickers use a high-strength adhesive. The vinyl may separate from the adhesive when removed, leaving residue behind. Sticky stuff remover, available from hobby shops and online, cleans adhesive residue effectively without damaging the sail.
Need Application Fluid?
We sell our own application fluid in our online shop — formulated for use with marine vinyl stickers. It's alcohol-based, evaporates cleanly, and is the only fluid we recommend for wet application.
- Alcohol-based — evaporates cleanly from behind the sticker
- Safe for use on sail fabric and hull surfaces
- Gives maximum sliding time for accurate positioning
- Available to buy individually or alongside any sticker order
